A brief history of IDEA

The IDEA (International Diving Educators Association) is the oldest diving organization of the United States . It was founded in 1952, initially for apnea divers. At the same time as scuba diving was started. In 1978 the association turned in to an organization for international certification, so said, an official institution.
The following years, the organization consolidated its presence on an international level participating as former member of the American diving confederation's constitution RSTC's (Recreational Scuba Training Council).
In Europe , IDEA has developed a didactic program in all the main languages. The courses start from basic level until instructor level plus the possible specializations. |
basic scuba diver
This is the first course that allows diving in open waters with a max. Depth limit of 12 m . under a dive master or instructor's supervision. This course has two theory lessons, two practices in delimited waters and two immersions in the sea. After two years of finalizing this course, it can be completed with the Open Water Diver certification.

open water diver
The Open Water Diver is the first course that allows diving in open waters with a max. depth limit of 18 m . and with mandatory supervision. This course is conformed of 6 theory lessons, 6 practices in delimited waters and a min. of 4 immersions in the sea. The min. age to apply is 15 years old. Child below that age between 13 and 14 years receive a Junior Diver license.

advanced open water diver
The Advanced Open Water is the first advanced level course. The objective is to complete the knowledge of the Open Water Diver certification and to test new dive experiences. The course is conformed of 5 practices (search and recovery, night and limited visibility, orientation, deep and aquatic rescue) with a theory introduction.

BASIC LEVEL:
Dive Safety Assistant, Basic Search and Recovery, Underwater Photography, Equipment specialist, Videosub, Dive Medic (First Aid, CPR, Oxygen Provider), Sea Biology.
ADVANCED LEVEL:
Nitrox Diver, Advanced Search and Recovery, Wreck Diver, Current Water Diver, Night/Limited Visibility Diver, Dry suit, Deep Diver, Computer Diving, Rescue Dive

divemaster
This course authorizes you to reach the pedagogic structure of this sport. All Advanced Open Water 2 IDEA or divers with similar certification from other organizations, are allowed to apply. The courses are theory structured, partly in order to get more knowledge about the diving practice and a practice part in which techniques in group management and control are applied.

assistant instructor
This degree is granted to a Dive master with the highest qualification and a wide experience, prepared for helping an instructor during all level courses and also to realize the Introductory Scuba. The Assistant Instructor can carry out the basic theory and practice lessons of the Open Water Diver when there is an instructor and to set up in the sea the specialized and advanced exercises.

scuba instructor
To this course can apply Dive masters IDEA or equivalent certification from a recognized organization and with a minimum of 100 registered immersions. After final examination the Scuba Instructor title will be given and from that point he can teach all IDEA levels, from the Skin Diver until Assistant Instructor. For certifying the specialties, the Scuba Instructor has to prove his qualification by sending an application form to the Presidency.
